Celebrate New Year's Eve in Flagstaff
Visitors in Flagstaff for New Year's Eve should not miss the city's traditional countdown celebration in downtown Flagstaff on December 31. Like a giant holiday ornament, the Weatherford Hotel's glistening giant Pinecone has been hoisted high atop the historic building with a digital countdown ticking away below it.
As Flagstaff's traditional New Year's Eve symbol for 16 years, the Great Pinecone is to Flagstaff what the glitzy giant ball is to New York City. Each year thousands of holiday revelers pour into the streets of historic downtown to see the 70-pound, six-foot, lighted aluminum creation.
During the celebration there will be two countdowns and pinecone lowerings: one at 10 p.m. to coincide with New York's Times Square celebration and another at midnight to mark Arizona's magical moment. Local personality Joe Harting will lead the crowd in song and countdown as the Weatherford Hotel dazzles with a light show and the City of Flagstaff illuminates the sky with fireworks.
The Great Pinecone Drop event is free and appropriate for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to carpool or use public transportation to and from the event.
